If only I had gone back to her apartment a day or two later when I knew she was feeling so desperate.  If only I hadn't defended Dad.  If only I hadn't introduced her to marijuana.

"And the ultimate 'if only.'  If only I hadn't been born.  She wouldn't have had to contend with this younger miracle sister.  I never saw myself as the miracle baby, the bonus baby Mom always told me that I was.  For as long as I can remember, I was the mistake.  The baby they thought they could never have.  The daughter they hadn't planned.  I spent many years trying to be the 'good child,' trying to prove to Mary that Mom & Dad loved me because I was a good girl, not because I was their natural born.  But no matter how hard I tried, she would throw it back when I got off the hook for something.  'You love Lornie more because she's your birth child.'"
